Transcontinental Vibrations: Bombay Royale

The Bombay Royale, world conquering purveyors of slammin’ surf-psyche funk, perform a one-off show at the Nightcat on 1st April 2017. The past 18 months has seen the band turn its back on fickle celebrity, non-stop partying and the seemingly endless debauchery for which they had become infamous. Shunning the limelight, they went on a deep journey of creative self-discovery, drinking deep from the well of vintage Bollywood and crafting fresh sounds from its inspiration. A new record is in the final stages of production and the band is once again preparing itself to slurp unashamedly from the sweet goblet of success!! Don’t be an April Fool, get yourself down to the Nightcat on April 1st.

Harvey Sutherland and Bermuda

Velour-funk technicians Harvey Sutherland and Bermuda bring their acclaimed live show around Australia and New Zealand in support of a new EP “Expectations”. The second release for Sutherland’s own Clarity Recordings brings his Bermuda project into sharp focus - six tracks spanning Harvey’s influences from the West Coast to West End Records.

The new EP comes after last year’s double-A side “Priestess/Bravado”, which received critical praise from The Guardian and Resident Advisor and support from disco luminaries The Black Madonna, Red Greg and Prins Thomas.

Sharing the name of his breakout 12”, Bermuda is Harvey Sutherland’s live band - a futurist outfit comprising Melbourne musicians Graeme Pogson (drums) and Tamil Rogeon (electric strings). The trio interpret Sutherland’s productions with flair and relentless consistency, bringing a unique energy to the club space.

Special Guests and Supports to be announced.

King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard - Flying Microtonal Banana

Following the frazzled freakbeat of 2016’s Nonagon Infinity, the endlessly inventive septetreturn in 2017 with new album Flying Microtonal Banana, their ninth studio album in five years, and the first of  five – count ‘em – planned new albums to be recorded and released in 2017 and beyond.

Flying Microtonal Banana marks another subtle shift in sound as King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard drive deep into trance-inducing drones, inventive jazz flourishes, non-Western musical scales and metronomic rhythms that motor along like a well-oiled engine. So unique and evolved is the album’s sound that it necessitated a total reinvention of the band’s instruments after they beganexperimenting with a custom microtonal guitar made for frontman Stu Mackenzie.

Inspired by the movable frets of the Turkish bağlama, three cheap old guitars and a basswere customized in order to explore a new set of musical notes. A keyboard and mouth organ followed suit and so Flying Microtonal Banana was born.

Transcontinental Vibrations: Baba Zula & Bullhorn

BaBa ZuLa are the unrivalled torchbearers of 21st Century psychedelic Turkish rock ’n’ roll.

Since 1996, the band has drawn inspiration from Istanbul’s rich history and the music of the sixties, fusing it with Oriental Dub and an electric energy that guarantees no two live shows are the same.

Their trance-inducing music is equally for electronic, dub, Turkish folk music fans and psychedelic rock heads. In 2005 they were featured in the film “Crossing The Bridge” which chronicled the diverse musical scene of Istanbul and two of their best known albums were produced by British dub legend Mad Professor.

Their ritual-like performances are a mixture of disciplines of art, often featuring belly dancers, elaborate costumes, poetry, theatre and live drawing, and by mixing oriental instruments such as the darbuka, electric saz, and spoons with electronics and modern sounds. Despite sounds that might initially come to mind when one hears a phrase like “Oriental Dub”, Baba ZuLa’s music is in fact psychedelic Istanbul rock’n’roll that rolls in a way that westerners haven’t heard so frequently since the late ’60s rock epoch.
BaBa ZuLa are: Murat Ertel - Electro Bağlama, vocal and effects, Levent Akman - Electronics, percussion and cymbals, Melike Şahin - vocals, Periklis Tsoukalas - Electro Oud and Ümit Adakale - Darbuka.

BaBa ZuLa are taking the stage at one of Melbourne’s finest live music venue; The NIGHT CAT, after their WOMADelaide performances.

Supporting BaBa ZuLa for this show, 7 piece Electro Oriental Ensemble BASHKA featuring emcee ELFTranzporter and instrumentalists from Turkey, New Zealand, and Australia and Mondo Loco & DJ Haloumi (back 2 back Dj set) will be spinning Turkish Psychedelic funk, Anatolian rock, Psychedelic bellydance, Saz Fuzz and Oriental disko all on vinyl.

Clairy Browne "Pool" Album Launch

Following up after a smash sold out show at The Toff in October Clairy will be opening her national tour at The Night Cat in Melbourne on 25th January followed by shows in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sydney and Adelaide, and, closing with the Grampians Music Festival at Halls Gap.

It has been more than 2 years since Clairy's last headline tour in her home country and after months in the rehearsal studio working on a new show, hot off the release of her new solo album "Pool", she is ready to take her brand of smouldering R&B and infectious edgy pop around the country.

Clairy Browne's new solo album "Pool" is a celebration of Clairy's love of pop and R&B music of all styles. From its robust takedowns ("F.U.B."), to its big soulful ballads ("Still Goodbye"), to its pop rhythms thick with dope beats and sticky melodies to burn ("Killem With It"), "Pool" is set to be on your summer party playlist. After the breakaway success of Browne's previous project as the front woman of the group Clairy Browne & The Bangin' Rackettes and their worldwide hit "Love Letter" Clairy has burst out of the Melbourne music scene with a new project that is fiercely independent. "Pool" splashes into the modern pop era and explores Clairy's new direction starting with the first single from the album, the big brash "Vanity Fair". Throughout the album Browne moves between styles and personas chameleon-like, from femmebot killer to super vixen. She is the street fashionista who loves Moschino, acrylic nails, and every shade of pink. She is also the boss bitch who wants to grind you beneath her stiletto heel.

Wet Dreams w/ Jex Opolis

Jex Opolis of Good Timin' Records here from NYC for an evening with Daydreams at The Night Cat.

A life-long musician and electronic music producer since the late 90s, Jex hatched Good Timin’ in 2010 as a solo, monthly club night in Toronto. Inspired by bad experiences with other labels, he decided to make Good Timin’ a record label in 2013 as a vehicle for his own music.

Since then, his melody-focused releases are regularly played out by top jocks while his 2015 club-ready EP on Gerd Janson's Running Back showed that Jex could also play in the big rooms, too.

His house-focused duo Conga Radio (with friend Roberto) has released a clutch of tracks over the past three years, including 2016’s “Right Beside You,” an underground hit which featured Jex on vocals.

As Jex himself says about his music: “We’re in the bath, we’re in the bar, we’re in the club, we’re in the car!”

BASHKA - Dance music from the dirt streets...
Drawing their inspiration from the vast ocean of Turkish music, Melbourne based group Bashka are creating a new genre which slips between east and west with natural ease.
Musically spanning two continents and many centuries Bashka explore the contrast between east and west, composed and improvised, original and traditional, acoustic and digital. The group was created in late 2014 by Murat Yucel and Alisha Brooks (Unified Gecko, Baro Banda) both of whom have toured extensively throughout Turkey, Europe and Australia. They recently joined forces with ELFTranzporter and their live performances are energised with a truly new sound combined with the delicacy of traditional Turkish instruments and master players. Live samples and loops merge seamlessly with ancient acoustic and modern western instruments to create music which brings to life old folk songs, gypsy ballads and dance music from the dirt streets of old Turkey.

NHATTY MAN & GARA
A household name in Ethiopia and around the worldwide Diaspora, Nhatty Man and his 5 piece band Gara are emerging as once of the most energetic acts to hit Australian stages. Since relocating to Melbourne from Addis Ababa, Nhatty has performed New Years Eve at Fed Square, collaborated with new sounds and rhythms from Colombia to Mauricious and released Selam, an EP combining Ethiopian roots and reggae with conscious lyrics in Amharic and English.

LA MAUVAISE REPUTATION
French gypsy swing virtuosos La Mauvaise Reputation are Australia's most authentic interpreters of the wild rhythms and passion of 1930s Parisian hot jazz and the beautiful melodies of classic French chanson - sung en française, bien sur.
