Night Cat Value Statement.

The Night Cat strives to be a safe place where anyone and everyone is welcome. We aim to be a leader in showcasing diversity, artists from marginalised communities and most importantly upholding values of inclusion and equity in the music industry in all areas of our business.

We have done some reflecting and we know that there’s room for improvement and we want to make changes so that we are accommodating absolutely everyone we can. Our goal is to be a platform for the incredible and talented musicians of Australia and the rest of the world and to have audiences feel welcome and inspired to support the talent that we host. The Night Cat is a Melbourne institution and we understand that we are in a position to have a lasting positive impact on the industry and how musicians, staff and audiences experience live music.

We understand that the world is constantly changing and that words aren’t enough. We are committed to taking action to ensure we are being the best we can be. If you want to see our progress and our future plans, click the link below to view our Equity Action Plan.

We also want to say a massive thank you to the VMDO and Diversity Arts Australia for including us in the Fair Play program 2021 and allowing us to be a part of and access the incredible workshops and mentors who helped us develop this plan.

This is an ongoing process for us that will span over years. Equity and inclusion is not something that happens overnight and we want to do our part in affecting change in the industry, starting with our venue.

Please note, this is a work in progress and constructive feedback is welcomed.

PROGRESS UPDATE - April 30th, 2021

Have you noticed our #imagedescription on our Facebook posts? Did you know that vision-impaired individuals need to use screen readers to describe and read posts? Most of the time screen readers struggle to read text with too many emojis and alternative fonts. Additionally, it’s not always easy for the AI to read out what imagery or video is accompanying the post. Memes are especially tricky with words and expression conveyance being so important for an onlooker to understand the reference. So, we are doing our own #imagedescriptions. We want all of our posts on social media to be accessible to everyone so that everyone has a chance to come and experience the incredible musicians who grace The Night Cat stage! Maybe try adding some image descriptions in your next post so that we can make the online world a more inclusive and inviting place!

PROGRESS UPDATE - July 7th, 2021

In line with our Equity Action Plan, we have begun to make amendments to our website to be more inclusive and equitable. If you navigate towards the Accessibility tab, you will notice that we have amended this page to be more specific about entryways and rises in the venue for anyone who is mobility challenged. You can find the width of entryways and the height of the rises that exist in the venue. We also encourage anyone to email us at info@thenightcat.com.au to reserve a space or seating if you require this for mobility purposes. In addition, we have nearby disabled toilets listed on our website and their operating hours. We have plans to renovate and build a disabled toilet as soon as financials allow.
